No but several medications work on more than one disorder because the medical problem is in the same area or function of the brain. It depends on the symptoms and the desired affect.
some meds are broad spectrum; many different uses.some cover more than just one symptom that you may have
you can consult gsk the laboratory who make the medication maybe there can answer your question http://www.gsk.ca/en/
I have never heard of wellbutrin being used for only ADD to be honest. I have heard of it used for people suffering from depression, and ADD - since you really can't take an ADD drug with Wellbutrin, and it's supposed to help the ADD in some way. Do you feel it is working? ARE YOU GETTING YOUR MEDS FROM A REGULAR DOCTOR OR A PSYCHIATRIST ? THE REASON I ASK IS MOST M.D.'S DO NOT KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT PSYCHIATRIC MEDS TO DISPENSE THEM CORRECTLY.ANTI-DEPRESSANTS WILL NOT HELP ADD,HOWEVER MEDICATION LIKE STRATTERA YOU (WHICH IS MADE SPECIFICALLY TO TREAT ADD AND ADHD) MIGHT SEEM TO HELP DEPRESSION ONLY BECAUSE ON YOU MIND IS CLEARER YOU MIGHT STOP FEELING DEPRESSED. I'D TALK TO A PSYCHIATRIST ABOUT YOUR MEDICATIONS, YOU NEED AN ANTI-DEPRESSANT TO TREAT YOUR DEPRESSION AND A SEPARATE MEDICATION SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO ADD TO TREAT YOUR ADD . GO BACK ON STRATTERA GIVE IT A MONTH OR SO CONTINUE TO YOUR ANTI-DEPRESSANT.AND YOU SHOULD GET BETTER RESULTS.
No, but they do know that every medication reacts differently with different people. That's why some meds have off-label uses like the ones you described. The pdoc is only trying to find the medication that works best for you.
Also, many mental disorders are caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, as you may have heard. Each medication targets different chemicals, and sometimes one chemical serves more than one purpose, which is why medications can be effective in a wide variety of situations.
