yes there is an alternative ti lithium that does not cause any weight gain, but before i tell you about these, i would like to point out to you that the tablets I'm gonna mention to you are not as good as lithium. i take it that you have manic depression, i have had manic depression since i was 17 and unfortunately i cannot take lithium because i have bad kidneys, but i was put on carbamazapine but it did not really help the ups and downs but about two years ago now i was put on carbamazapine slow released which i think is called carbamazepine retard well i know its called carbamazepine retard and i also take quetiapine which is a drug that belongs to a group of anti psychotics but i think bout year and half ago it was also licenced as a mood stabiliser, but i think some doctors are still not aware off this.
If i was you i would make an appointment to see my psychiatrist and tell him how unhappy the lithium is making you because of the weight gain,and that you would like to try something else don't be afraid of suggesting medication to your doctor after all your the one who is receiving the treatment and the person who has to live with the mental health.
