Who thinks that people who live and experience mental illness should be considered experts in mental illness?
Question:
Answers:
I have a life long history of depression and other associated issues, but I don't feel I am an expert by any means.
What i do feel is that I would much rather discuss issues such as depression with a person who has personal experience of it because they are much more aware of the condition and are far less likely to say 'pull yourself together' and all the other meaningless cliches othe people tend to say.
people with a history of mental illness are definitely more easy to talk with about it, but I would still take advice about my treatment from a qualified therapist and my doctor when it came to it, because I know they have training and experience that I don't have and that many other people with mental health problems don't have

That's like saying someone with a broken leg is an expert at fixing broken legs. It makes no sense whatsoever.
Nobody, I hope. There are hundreds of types of mental illness and nobody can experience all of them. And if someone DID feel that they're an expert, then they need to get back on their meds because they're still mentally ill.
Some people consider experience to be the best teacher. I dissected a frog in high school. Maybe I should take up brain surgery? Who knows, maybe I will get you as a patient.
it's true only as far as the rehabilation of addicts is cocerned . many rehab. centres have reformed and clean individuals, who were alcoholics, or drug addicts earlier. as they know the pitfalls, they can assist the therapists and counsellors in helping addicts admitted in the centre much better, as they feel genuinely for the cause.also the people who complete the entire corse of psychotherapy with a qualified and authentic therapist, can act as therapists themselves. besides these two areas, whoever told you people who were mentally ill can be experts in treating ? somehow, we tend to take a casual view of the mental health problems, we must work towards changing these attitudes.
