What are the origins of Phsyciatric ward rounds? How did they start and for what purpose?
Question:
Answers:
They're just like any other ward round. On any medical or surgical ward there will be a ward round first thing in the morning, and usually another one later in the afternoon. It's the same with psychiatric wards, the patients need constant reviewing from day to day so that the doctors can see whether they are improving or not, and consider whether any changes in medication or treatment are required. I'd imagine they pretty much started with the first psychiatric hospital.

ive been in various hospitals and doctors never failed to come check on me.
I would think that in any hospital setting, even if its a mental one. A patient would be checked on every hour or every couple of hours when they are in their rooms. Are they sleeping okay? Do they need something? Are they in distress and need assistance? (Esp in the days before they had call buttons), etc.
Your consultant has to see you regularly, because nurses can't diagnose or prescribe, they can only make suggestions, and usually anyone old enough to be a consultant is from the school of thought that all nurses are stupid and their suggestions are to be ignored.
One consultant I used to work 'with' would only speak to the F grades. Muppet.
Psychiatrics is a very young science. It's about 100 years old in compare with physical medicine and surgery that dates back to several 1000 years ago. Anyway, in medical and psychiatric rounds some physicians and professors check tha patient and also it is educational too( for younger physicians and students). These psychiatric rounds are originally started when famous Karl Gustav Jung was a student in the beginning of the 20th century.
