What is the common element in schiziophrenia that make it so frequently a diagnosis for so many symptoms?

Question:

Answers:
There is no ONE common element, although hallucinations are the hallmark of schizophrenia. But people can have schizophrenia without frank hallucinations, and they can have hallucinations without having schizophrenia.

Like many psychiatric conditions, doctors have found a group of symptoms to describe a problem. Some patients will have all the symptoms, but others will have all the symptoms minus one or two.

Try this to understand. When most people have a cold, they have a cough, congestion, runny nose, fever, sore throat, and headache. Take away ANY ONE of those symptoms. You pick. Now read over the list of what's left. If you had those symptoms, you can probably still be pretty sure you have a cold. It's kind of the same with schizophrenia.

Here are some of the symptoms of schizophrenia:

Hallucinations (usually auditory) - hearing and seeing things that nobody else sees or hears.

Delusions - ideas that are not based on reality ("I have a transistor in my head that the CIA uses to monitor my activities." "I get secret messages from God through CSPAN."

Disorganized speech
Catatonia
Paranoia

Flat affect (an expressionless face) or an inappropriate affect (laughing and smiling for no reason or as they say they are feeling sad or mad).

Other Answers:
i think it's the inability to identify the source of emotional discomfort
A true diagnosis for schizophrenia is that the patient hears voices. But it is a thin line between schizophreni and bipolar. Both have the symptom of highs and lows, but the incidents of schizophrenics have psychotic features. It is harder then you think to have a diagnosis of schizophrenia.
