Hello.... whether or not a person is bipolar or has a chance to become bipolar is determined at the point of conception. You must be genetically predisposed, meaning that if your parents or grandparents have the gene, they will have passed it along to you. This does not neccessarily mean that you will ever get the disease. The illness must have some sort of trigger to present itself .Alot of people have been misdiagnosed with depression only when they are in fact bipolar. The reason for this is because the deppressive side of the illness was first to show itself. You were prescribed antidepressants which acted as a trigger for the manic side of your illness, much in the same way that people who abuse street drugs such as meth, ecstacy and lsd [to name a few] become bipolar. I'm hoping that more people become aware that when depression becomes a problem for them, be sure to check your family history and discuss anything you find with your psychiatrist, and be painfully honest about what you've been feeling. Being misdiagnosed is the worst thing that can happen. It will change the rest of your life. My daughter is bipolar and even though her trigger was a serious and near fatal operation, I have learned much about this disease since then. Best of luck to you.....
