Why do people who take antidepressents have a tendency to go off their meds?

Question:
They don't take their meds even though it makes them feel better.

Answers:
Well first of all, it takes awhile for the meds to kick in sometimes as long as 6-8 wks, I believe ppl want or think that they should be able to see results right away, and when they don't see the results they quit. My sister has been on several times and only takes them for a bit and then quits - perhaps ppl are scared to be on antidepressants because there is a stigma that they will be labelled as "Crazy". Which of course is sooooo untrue. I myself have been on antidepressants for almost 4 year for anxiety and it really helps! And I used to be one of those ppl that said, I will never take fake crap like that to make me feel better..well I guess I looked at the pro's and con's of them and decided that it would be of benefit to me - I am so glad I started, because the panic attacks that I was having were AWEFUL, and were getting worse each time! So for all of you that are debating whether to take these or not - all you can do is try!! What works for me may not work for you. Keep in mind it takes awhile for the meds to kick in.

side effects make you feel slow.

Doesn't always work

A lot of people use pain and suffering as fuel for their lives, sometimes it's just how some of us work. Pain generally evolves into strength and it lets you know your still among the living!

because anti-depressants make you less depressed, people who feel less depressed think that they don't need anti-depressants even though they are only not depressed due to the medication.

They think "oh hey I'm better now" not realizing that they are better now because of the medication.

Because when they take them, they feel better and then think "well, I feel better and don't need my medication any more." Then as the medication slowly wears off, they begin to go back into the depression without realizing that they're going downhill again. Most of the people who do this are really not the sharpest knife the drawer. The smarter ones know that their medication is as necessary as insulin to a diabetic and for the same reason - chemical imbalance in their body. the side effects suck

If they feel better they think they are better so the stop taking the meds. Much the same as not finnishing a perscription because you feel well.

Peronally ,I stopped taking them because of the negative side effects. You take the medicine, you feel great, you think, "I feel great! Why am I taking these dumb pills?" Then you stop taking them, crash, and remember why.

I take them and alot of the time I just plain feel better and don't want to be dependent on pills. It's such a slow process for them to work properly, you sometimes don't remember how bad it can be when you're off of them and want to "give it another shot" being medicine free. that's my personal experience, anyway!

Most of them will take the meds and because they feel better they stop, but problem is, it was the meds that made them feel better.
Think of the menatlity of takin meds though. You have a cold, you take your cough syrup for X amoutn of days and it goes away, then you stop taking the syrup right? Same mentality.
Makes sense in a way doesnt it? Problem is it is not the case for depression. You keep taking the meds to keep feeling better.
Other than that some just do not want to be depedant on a pill all their lives. It can add to the depression and esteem.

I teach 150 emotionally and behaviorally challenged students and this is asked alot.. can you tell?

They are probably already feeling worthless so just plain can't be bothered.Too much hassle for someone that's not worth it. I can't speak for everyone, but I used to do this: I'd feel better and think that I no longer need the meds. After a while, the depression kicked in again (well duh!), and I'd be back to square 1.

It's human nature to discontinue meds when we feel better. How many of us take antibiotics for the full 10 days when a Dr prescribes them to us? Many times we take it until we feel better and then discontinue taking it.

I found out the hard way, now I take the meds even if I'm happy.

I find that I go off for a few reasons. The first one and probably the most likely for me is, I think I am doing fine and dont need them. (this is a mistake) second one is I forget (side effect of the meds) Other times I just want to have some normal feelings because they dull everything.

Each of these tend to result in depression a few days later.

I agree completely with some of the answers already given. When you are taking the anti-depressants they do exactly what they are designed to do, make you less depressed. When you feel less depressed you start to think that you don't need the drugs anymore so you stop. Also I've heard of a lot of people who don't like the side effects so they stop taking them and just try to deal with being depressed instead of talking to their doctor to try a different remedy. Side affects for me was worse then the symptoms. If you like sitting on the couch feeling totally listless unable to concentrate and feeling doped up well this is the med for you as for me the pills went into the toilet.

No insurance and no money to get rx, weight gain, feel okay so you stop.
Or they make you too even keeled. One of the drugs the doctor had me try evened me out too much. I didn't feel anything. It was great not being sad and depressed, but there were no highs (regular normal I should be happy, really happy abt this) It was like I had no emotions at all.
