Recently diagnosed with OCD?

Question:
How long do you have to take the meds I have not started therapy yet but have been given a prescription of prozac. So far it helped the bad thoughts almost as soon as I started it . I know it going to take a while to help the obsessions and compulsions. I do not like meds I been on this for one week and I hope this is not long term. Can anyone can tell me if therapy will eliminate the need for the prozac prescription.

Answers:
Sometimes therapy does help. If you've had any kind of trauma, dealing with that can help. It would not hurt to talk to a therapist. It is even possible that you may not have considered something to be mentally damaging but it actually was. But even if you have to continue to take medication for it, isn't it better to be happy and healthy on meds than all the other stuff you were dealing with without being on them? Being on medication does not make you weak or a lesser person than anyone else.

Other Answers:
You should be seeking therapy along with taking prozac.

A good therapist will help you find what has trigged the OCD and find alternative methods in gaining control over it.

Then you can be weaned off the prozac my little neice has OCD and she is also on prozac. Therapy is great for helping you control it but the prozac is used to stimulate the side of the brain that causes OCD. If you stop taking your meds. then even with the therapy it will come back its not that you are crazy or you are weird its just a medical condition that needs to be controlled and unfortunately there is no cure for OCD. you will have to take the meds for the rest of your life
