Why do I stay up when I know I should be sleeping?

Good question.
But there's a difference between when you should be sleeping and when you want to be sleeping. What you should be doing is to guide you. What you finally actually do is governed by your own decisions, not what you should be doing.
If you should go to sleep at a particular time and you want to too, then you will. Otherwise you won't. Just use your willpower if you want to do what you should. Nothing else will help. Because sometimes what should be done isnt what we want to do. Then you must be strong enough to force yourself in the right direction.

even if i stay up late, i also wake early, so i am spending way too much time on here
You might have a sleep disorder, or your hours are all messed up. You should talk to a doctor about this it can be serious.
When I worked for one company, I switched to graveyard. I couldn't sleep once the sun started coming up. I told this to one gal I knew and she said she had no problem doing it.
What she told me to do was not worry about anything. And that included going to sleep. Might take a little getting used to, but relaxing your mind is the key to going to sleep.
You're afraid your going to miss something I do the same thing! And, I don't know why! I can tell you that I hate lying in bed awake. So, I wait til I am dead tired to go.
