Bipolar disorder (previously known as manic depression) is a diagnostic category describing a class of mood disorders where the person experiences states or episodes of depression and/or mania, hypomania, and/or mixed states. Left untreated, it is a severely disabling psychiatric condition. The difference between bipolar disorder and unipolar disorder (also called major depression) - for the purpose of this introduction - is that bipolar disorder involves "energized" or "activated" mood states in addition to depressed mood states. The duration and intensity of mood states varies widely among people with the illness. Fluctuating from one mood state to another is called "cycling" or having mood swings. Mood swings cause impairment not only in one's mood, but also in one's energy level, sleep pattern, activity level, social rhythms and thinking abilities. Many people become fully disabled - for significant periods of time - and during this time have great difficulty functioning.
Currently bipolar disorder cannot be cured but it can be managed. The emphasis of treatment is on effective management of the long-term course of the illness, which can involve treatment of emergent symptoms. Treatment methods include pharmacological and psychological techniques.
A variety of medications are used to treat bipolar disorder; most people with bipolar disorder require combinations of medications.
I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder ten years ago. I was on medication (lithium) for 8 years. The medication worked well but I have been off of it for almost 2 years and have been pretty good. The BEST cure is exercise.good heart pumping cardio at least 4 times a week. Then on top of that eating good foods (not a lot of sugar and junk), getting plenty of sleep, and not partying! I find when I treat my body well my brain is much happier. I have shown up to the gym with tears streaming down my face and punching the steering wheel before, and after I got through exercising and got back into my car I listened to the song I was listening to on my way to the gym and was look.whoa I can't believe I felt like that earlier!
Oh that's another one I try my best to not multiply my moods by blasting sad or manic music (real hard not to do though)
If I am feeling really antsy, talking to fast I go for a run. When I just can not sleep I'll take a sleeping pill (not often though) because when your not sleeping (sign of manic phase) it makes you even more crazy!!
Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function. Different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through, the symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. They can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicide.
I have bipolar and I personally take meds for it. I have heard of people not taking meds, but they usually aren't very sucessful in controling their mood swings and usually have bad outcomes.
The best way to combat bipolar is take you meds, go to therepy, eat healthy, and do exercise. I know, it's almost like going on a diet, but you really do have to change your lifestyle pattern. You should also try to set a routine to your days and follow it. That's not to say that you can't do things spontaniously, but do try to have a regular routine because it'll help you in the ling run.
