Wellbutrin SR/XL -- What are the differences?? Is SR generic?

Question:

I'm confused about these different formulations of Wellbutrin. Several years ago, Wellburin SR/150mg was prescribed for me; and I bought it (through my insurance) at the price of a generic ($5 copay). Now a friend of mine has a script for SR -- and it seems that there is no generic product available. Anybody know the answer here; as well as the difference between SR and XL

Sustained vs. extended release. Wellbutrin SR lasts for a shorter time. You have to take it twice a day. Wellbutrin XL slowly releases medication throughout the day, so you only have to take it once a day.
There is a generic for Wellbutrin SR but not XL.

Look at your friend's script again. There is a generic form, but it goes by the generic name "bupoprion". See if the script allows substitution--probably under the doctor's signature.

If it doesn't, they will have to call their doctor to get it changed.

SR stands flow slow release which means that the medication is slowly released into your body throughout the day eventually maintaining a constant level in yor bloodstream.The term generic means same drug just sold and made by a different company than the people who actually first invented the medication.Hope this helps some.
