I think it confuses them, and that's why. It also depends on the atmosphere where they are raised and how sex is presented. In movies and TV sex is often portrayed in conjunction with violence- as in rape and that can be upsetting. But I too wonder why graphic violence is so much more accepted then sex. I find violence much more upsetting to me, and I'd expect it to be to any child. Of course, no one needs to see the graphic details- but the love shared by consenting adults can be beautiful. Though still not appropriate for young children, I don't see how it could negatively influence older children when presented as part of the story line and not too graphic in detail. At some point it's natural and healthy. I was raised to the extent that I had no knowledge at all about sex and was very confused as a teenager when I first learned about it. I would rather have had some idea what it was about before I experienced it.
And Becky (above) has a point. That's where "age appropriate" needs to be considered and parents or someone (many parents won't let schools) needs to be teaching about STD's and Pregnancy at some point.

What ages are you talking about? Surely your're asking the wrong question.. The question you should be asking is why on earth does anyone still believe that children aren't watching films with sexual content in an era in which everything is available on demand?
From the moment the first (betamax) video cassette recorder was invented the notion of a 'watershed' became obsolete as all a child had to do was learn how to program the video recorder and they could watch all the sexual content that was broadcast on all the multitude of channels that the individual home could receive. Equally, in an era of internet availability to so many teenagers in their own bedrooms, away from the prying eyes of their parents, do we honestly believe that the under-18's DON'T access sites that they're not meant to?
When a parent gives their child a mobile phone so that they can check up on them and tell them they're late picking up their proverbial tammy or tarquin on the school run do they honestly believe that the aforementioned tammy or tarquin DOESN'T access Wap or video-mobile services whilst waiting for their tardy parental unit to arrive?
We kid ourselves (no pun intended) if we think that children do not watch films with sexual content when we live in world in which so many formats of so much material is so freely available.
