Third Person?

Question:
Why do some people refer to themselves in third person view? Like they'll say, "Bob likes that" instead of, "I like that."

Sounds wacky to me,

Answers:
they want to reinforce their identity, impress the opposite person with their choices, and want them to remember always about it. the roots of this emphtic way of talking could be stressed in their childhood, when their overprotective parents will always refer and impress upon their vulnerable minds, do's and don's, conditioning them to such an extent, that even as adults, they will go on repeating, Bob likes this, Bob should not look at those naughty girls, etc. as you say, it does sound odd, because normal people will boldly say , i like it, or i don't like it. have you seen the movie Psycho? the neurotic mother has created a monster out of her son, who hates young, beautiful girls due to her, and even after she is dead, goes on murdering them. so next time you come across this kind of Bob, better be careful!

Other Answers:
It is a sign of low self esteem. Though occasionally people do it just to be funny - but then they do it irregularly and not very often.

Of course when Bob Dole did it, he was trying to get his name out as much as possible in order to make people remember it.

cuz it makes us sound silly. i know people who do that. it's hilarious!!

It's actually how "royalty" speaks, in the third person.

I can't say that I agree it's a form of insecurity, it's merely a habit developed somewhere along the way.
