Question about severe depression?

Question:
I have suffered with severe depression most of my life. Last year, with my doctors supervision, I discontinued taking all of my meds. My husband and children have been wonderful in helping me and for the most part I have done well. My problem is that while I don't feel sad anymore, I don't feel happy either. I feel as if I am just going through the motions with no feelings at all. The strange thing is that I know I am happy. I have a great life, a wonderful supportive husband and children. I have an awesome group of friends I just can't feel happy. Has anyone else experienced this? What did you do to help yourself because I am at a total loss as to what to do. I don't want to go back on the meds because the side effects are horrible I don't need to talk to a doctor because I have plenty of supportive people to talk to. They just don't always unserstand what I'm going through. So I would appreciate ansewers from people who understand. Please no mean answers. :)

Answers:
I know what you mean, the word is apathy. I have bipolar and if I am not hypomanic, I am apathetic.
You are very fortunate to have such a good support system in place. If they or you notice yourself slipping into old patterns of depressive behavior, call your shrink asap! There should be some support groups around your town for people with depressive disorder, maybe you could join one. There are lots of us around that feel like you do, sometimes the internet isnt the place to connect. I am not saying I am one, but there are kooks out there. I would say a support group would be in order, face-to-face is always better than the internet
Peace to you

maybe try going on a vacation or something- but tie up all loose ends before you leave and worry about absolutely nothing. do whatever you want for a week and just let your mind find itself. that, or meditation also helps.

Have you been checked for a hormone imbalance?

Sometimes it's not depression..a hormonal imbalance can affect your moods and your every day living.

Ask your doctor to do blood tests to check your hormone levels or ask to be referred to an "endocrinologist"

This may not be the answer for your situation, but I am just naming a possibility.

Good luck. :) take care

I think maybe it is time to talk to the doc, maybe instead of being on lots of meds for depression, you might be able to find one that helps with minimal side effect.

I know I have tried a few of them, some of them were downright awful. I seem to be doing ok on Wellbutrin.

I am anorexic, have an anxiety disorder and bipolar (and i hate labels lol). I completely relate to having a great life and still feeling like $hit. Sometimes when I'm out with friends I feel awful and just can't stay - it sucks. As for meds, I HATE them too, but my parents won't let me off.
I do find that lithium works without weight gain though.it helped stablize me and as for therapy..voice lessons. doing what i love helps more. clonzopine is good too.
I dont kno if im helping but I really feel for you - just keep moving, distract yourself and go on. You are one of the strongest people out there - keep it up!

Depends what causes your depression. I suggest you go see a cousellor, do some cognitive thinking.
And charish what you have: nice family and friends. Not everyone has those.
Perhaps trying putting family photos and friends photos on the fridge (magnet), so everytime you went to the fridge, you see them and it becomes a habit to remind yourself of wonderful people you have in your life. all the things you think prove you have a great life are external. you. need to be in intense therapy especially since you've decided to come off your meds. you and i know there are no magic pills out there but they can help stabilize your brain but they can not stabilize your heart only you have the power to do that. unless you are willing to invest the time and tears into getting to root of your issues, you will always feel that you are just existing.go to therapy so you can start LIVING.the reason you should be talking with a professional and not your friends is, because they do not know you they can and will completely impartial, and you can then be completely honest with them and yourself.
