Just as effective. having been on both, I'd have to say no. I understand the theory that goes with the time-releasing it, but it doesn't really put you in the same spot those separated doses will. It has less of an abuse potential than the instant release.

Yes. It is time released. You get an equal amount of the medication spread throughout the day. It eliminates remembering to take the meds.(more convenient=better compliance)

I havent ever heard of Xanax XR.All Xanax are the same drug.the milligrams vary however.I take 3.2milligram Xanax a day the white bars.The XR is a new on on me.

I suggest NOT taking anything except directly under doctor's orders.and then only as long as you're absolutely sure you need it.try reducing dosages, again under doctor's supervision.if ya can live without it, don't put it in your mouth.
