I have an emotionally disturbed nephew who's parents need help, beyond school. Low income home multi children.

Question:
This child has been in the hospital for extended stay, but was let go suddenly due to insurance issues. The special ed school he attends will not allow him to be in after school events. No daycare will take him. We are at a loss. We live in the albuquerque, nm area. Any help is help.

Answers:
File for social security. Read IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Act) what the school is doing is SHADY. Contact a childcare Resource and Referral Agency in NM they may have some info on providers who specialize in ED (emotionally disturbed) children or in home providers who can give more individual care. If the child is at all a harm to self or others no one is legally allowed to turn him away. Find a local community mental health center (CMHC) and get him hooked up with a child therapist. I recommend CMHC's because they often have more resources (as far as referalls and advocacy go) than private pay. Plus they will have sliding scale fee's and case managers. Good Luck!

Other Answers:
I worked for a dual-diagnosis program (people with alcohol/ drug addiction and mental health issues. His parents need to file for social security and he will receive medi-care. That will usually cover alot of hospitaliztion, meds, psychologists, etc. They should check the yellow pages for the social security phone number in the government listing. They can also check with a local county mental health agency. There is also a patients rights advocacy contact number they can get if they ask for it. If i knew his diagnosis, I could look through my DSM IV book and research it for you. Good luck and GOD bless the whole family!! (SJR) P.S. I will look for some numbers tomorrow in my resouce book and come back to answer the question deeper.
As far as the insurance issue goes this has become a major issue for a lot of people. I do know that there are advocates for the disabled out there that can help you. My best suggestion for locating one would be with contacting your nearest Social security office. I hope this can be of some help to you. You will be in our prayers
