I'm goin' to the therapist! YIKES?

Question:
First time going, and it's because I am a cutter. If I flat out tell her "Hey, i cut myself last night, but I don't want to kill myself, and I never harm people around me" will she put me away? Will she say I'm a danger to myself and put me in the hospital? These scars aren't life threatening at all, but should I tell her?

Answers:
First of all, good for you for going. I know it's really hard to admit that you need a little help sometimes. Be honest with your therapist. She'll probably ask you some basic questions to begin with about current stressors in your life and she'll help you figure out how to deal with them. Don't be afraid to come right out with things. She needs to know all the facts in order to treat you in the best way possible. Good luck with your recovery. And remember that you're definitely not alone in this!

Other Answers:
In order for the therapy to be sucessful, you need to be honest with your therapist, or else why go!

Yes, you should tell her. You will only get "put away" if your cutting is very severe. The more you tell your therapist, the better she will be able to help you. Chances are, she will want to work with you, not against you. Tell her the truth. She can help you. You may "have it under control" (so to speak), but it will get worse and your problems will get bigger. Do everything you can to work this out now.

i think you should tell her. the whole point of going to the therapist is to tell her everything that you feel is bothering you. tell her what's going on in your life. especially the cutting. as you well know cutting is not normal. so she may be able to find a solution. the scars are not life threatening, but the infection that you can possibly get from cutting yourself can be life threatening. remember God made you and he loves you.

That depends. Do you really want to get better or not? I can't say what the therapist will or will not do that depends on the therapist. If they are not deep enough to cause severe damage then there is a possibility she isn't going to suggest hospitalization. Cutting and attempting suicide are two totally different things. A cutter is not trying to take their life it is just a way of releasing anger or pain. For some reason for a lot of cutters pain on the outside temporarily eases emotional pain on the inside. Be honest with the therapist. If you thought you were having a heart attack you wouldn't tell the doctor you think you have heartburn. Because if you did he wouldn't give you proper treatment. Same thing here. You have to find the courage to be open and truthful so that you can get the help you need. I hope you can realize that because this is holding you back in life and you can get better. Good luck. I have a friend and for privacy reasons lets call her Kiki . Kiki cuts her self and she see a shrink and no she wasnt locked up
