Is schizophrenia a hereditary Disease?

Question:
My sister in law has that and my friend keeps saying that I have to be careful for my children.

Answers:
yes, it can run in families, but just because one person in the family has it, does not mean anyone else will have it. Schizophrenia can also be caused by child abuse, and trauma as a child.

Other Answers:
yes schizophrenia is a hereditary disease.

Yes Well if your sister in law has the disease, then you don't have to worry about heredity as she is only related to you by law, not blood.

Why would you have to worry about your children becoming schizophrenic if your sister-in-law has the disease? She has no genetic link to those children.

But, yes, schizophrenia does tend to run in families.

yes, my uncle has it.paranoia schizophrenia.i have bipolar 1 oh ya definitley

Yes it is hereditary. My 1/2 brother is paranoid schizophrenic as was his father, paternal grandmother and uncle. His aunt was bi polar. It tends to run in families. However if your husband isn't schizophrenic I wouldn't worry too much about it. It is possible, but less likely if only his sister is schizophrenic.

If you are really worried about it maybe you should consider adoption..
