I volunteered for a consumer-run non-profit group that was trying to put a drop-in center together. The group is in a slump right now, and I'm moving on to other things, but I worked with them for 3 years and wrote a few grant proposals to try to get things going. We were working with Texas Mental Health Consumers (TMHC) in Austin. They are a non-profit who gets money from the state to grow consumer groups who offer peer support services. Unfortunately, ours just didn't have the infrastructure, and we had a couple of destructive personailities on our board.
Now, I am going to Iris Place. Iris Place is assisted living for people with a mental illness. It's the name of the apartment complex, which has a clubhouse with all sorts of activities for consumers. The name of the group who runs Iris Place is Planned Living Assistance Network (PLAN) of North Texas.
It's cool, because before when I was doing all of that volunteer work, my relationships were all business-oriented. Now, I feel like I'm somewhere where I can relax, hang out, and be myself. It's a much more supportive environment than before. I go up there two or three times a week, and we play games or do Tai Chi, or whatever.
All that time I was trying to put a drop-in center together, when there was one I could have been attending, right there. The only difference is that Iris Place is not consumer-run, which has advantages and disadvantages.
