My Dad goes loopy if he drinks 8 units of spirit or barley wine. The same quantity (units) of a lesser beer..

Question:
.. leaves him just merry. I could understand this if it were the concentrated dose over time, but through my experience, this is not the case. Is there a reason why different alcoholic beverages produce varying effects?

Answers:
Loopy is drunk. 8 "units" of anything in a short period of time is a lot of booze. 8 cans of beer 8 shots of whiskey arent the same partly because of fluid content and absorbtion.

The liver can metabolize about 12oz of beer or one 1oz alcohol in an hour, anything more then that the booze remains in the bloodstream at a higher level than can be metabolized.

If he drinks 8 of anything at one sitting on a regular basis he has the makings of a problem drinker if not the disease mechanism of alcoholism.

Other Answers:
It's to do with how quickly your body absorbs alcohol. Different people can tolerate different drinks. I can drink 3 glasses of whisky and it has little effect on me. If I drink the same quantity of alcohol as wine, I fall over.
So what is the problem...
They have different strenghs... geeeeez

BTW he sounds like a pi ss head, too many drunks in the world ... quadruple the cost of booze.
could be the ingredients used or the process of making the wine that affects him different from how beer does...
Alcohol affects people differently and that goes for different kinds of alcohol::
It's probably the other chemicals in the barley wine affecting him on top of the alcohol. I'm not sure what you mean by loopy, but if he becomes a danger to himself or to others than he needs to stop drinking, or at least to stop drinking the stuff that sends him funny.
Barley wine is very strong I drank it myself years ago.It affected me much more than other drinks.
I'm not sure, but it made me think, Cheers
