What are the best techniques to compartmentaliz. thoughts?

Question:
For example even the best doctors and clergy have pressing problems but most (I hope) have a way of compartmentalizing these troubles and thoughts and giving us thier full attention when we need them most. How can we give our focus when needed to give others our full attention and then come back to the pressing needs when appropriate?

Answers:
keep a diary or meditate?

Other Answers:
Meditation I'd imagine.

I think it's mostly a matter of mind over matter. Also, if you really care about the person or thing that you are dealing with, it won't be hard to give them your focus.

Some people, however, do have a problem with ADD or ADHD and they find it harder to practice this skill..those types might need some medication to help them improve their ability to focus.

A complete understanding of the issues (and their relationships to one another), prioritising and self discipline.

To achieve the first, you could fabricate a 'mind map' - that is, an associated web diagram. On a piece of paper, write out all the pressing needs and their characteristics (be brief). Then, try and identify any connections between issues (eg cause/effect), this will help you understand all your issues more concisely.

Next, write out the demands facing you. Who needs what, when? Write down the order in which the issues are required. Now, you have your list of priorities.

Exercising self discipline, systematically progress through your agenda - devoting your full attention to each 'compartment'.

Once completed, consult your mind map/priority list and look for the next item at hand (it will usually be either the most urgent or the most directly related to the issue you just addressed). Repeat as above.
