Bipolar is a hard desease to live with. The mood swings, the depression, and if people do not understand this, relationships are bound to suffer. There are medications to level you out. Check with your doctor.
Your depression may be addressed by being aware of the food you are eating. Some foods reduce your energy level and some foods raise your energy level. I have found a mostly vegetarian diet to work well at raising my energy level and keeping depression at bay. I would suggest keeping a journal of what you eat and then the symptoms experienced the next day. You may gradually work out what your system needs for optimum health.
I don't have a reliable and legit source - just a theory.

When the brain realizes it is getting too much sugar, it asks for more insulin production, which can overproduce, and pull too much sugar out of the bloodstream, resulting in too little sugar to the brain (also weight gain), possibly initiating the low of the bipolar. When there is enough or too much blood sugar then that could be the high end.

If your doctor is willing to test you for high insulin, you may want to test my possibly wacky theory out.

In the meantime, if you need help re-programming yourself to think good thoughts about yourself, start a journal. Write down 3 statements each day that are true about you, that are wholely positive, and that are about things that you are, or things that you can do. Such as - I can read. I am a helpful person. I can change the oil in a car's engine. (These are true - about me.) Try to write down 3 new things each day - but if you can't think of anything new, or you are on a down day and you are not thinking positive thoughts, re-read your prior pages and write down ones you have already written. It works.
I had a friend of twelve years that suffered from this disorder. What I saw with him was, yes, he lost friends etc, mostly because people weren't aware that he had a problem. With this disease you have a tendency to say and do things that are cruel, mean, vicious, deceitful, etc. But if the people you are acquainted with know of the condition and care, they will know to put aside your flightiness and wait on YOU to return. More importantly, you have GOT to take your medications, EVERYDAY.
