Do you think depression is just an excuse for laziness?

Question:
I'm debating with a friend about social economics and I need some good answers..

1.Why do many people who don't improve their lives complain that they are "depressed" and that it is not just an excuse. Can depression really cause you to not advance your economic situation?

2.Why is depression a valid condition for wealthy people (they buy medication for it),
but for the have nots it's an excuse?

3.Can a depressed person function as well as one who is not depressed??

Answers:
People who are depressed don't necessarily realize that they need help or feel comfortable going for it. Depression can affect every aspect of your life so yes people may not be able to advance their economic status because of depression.

People may not have enough money or insurance to cover the costs of fighting their depression. They also may be poor because of their depression like i said before depression can affect every aspect of your life.

Its possible that they can but many people do not function as well because of the emotional or physical effects depression has on them.

Other Answers:
no depression can lead to laziness

No 1) Depression has caused people to lose promotions, to lose jobs, to spend money carelessly or gamble away everything they had. Apparent laziness or foolishness may be a symptom of depression.

2) Depression affects all economic classes equally. Access to prescription drugs is easier for the upper classes.

3) Depressed people may or may not function as well as others -- symptoms vary widely.
