Does Zyprexa still cause weight gain if you control your diet?
Question:
Answers:
I am a Psychiatric Nurse, and have spoken with drug reps about this at great length. Apparently, the first 6 months on the medication is when people gain weight. They feel this insatiable need to eat large quantities of food all day and night. The rep. told me they did studies where they controlled the food intake of patients for the first 6 months, and they did not gain weight. If you go to the Zyprexa website, you can join a program where they will help you with diet choices for free! Zyprexa is such an effective medication for so many people, that weight gain should not discourage you from taking it, because it can be controlled!
Hope this helps.
Other Answers:
If you are somebody that already has poor metabolism control (even while watching your diet), it will be harder to lose weight on Zyprexa. Zyprexa is one of the many anti-psychotic drugs that have been implicated in diabetes. Discuss this with your physician before you agree to take the drug and ask your doctor to refer you to a dietician or public health nurse to assist you in nutritional information and weight loss.
