Yes, there are any number of different tests that can be used. The most common is to ask some specific questions, and if you answer yes to more then the required number, you are diagnosed with depression. The DSM-IV The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Version IV, the bible for defining mental illnesses, uses I believe 7 questions, and if you answer yes to more than 4, you have it.
There are on-line tests you can take to evaluate yourself for depression that dig a little deeper. Remember:These are not definitive tests, and should be used ONLY to determine if you should seek professional help.
