how can i cope with social phobia?

Question:

Answers:
A phobia (from the Greek φόβος "fear"), is a strong, persistent fear of situations, objects, activities, or persons. The main symptom of this disorder is the excessive, unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. When the fear is beyond one's control, or if the fear is interfering with daily life, then a diagnosis under one of the anxiety disorders can be made.

The way I've done it has actually worked somewhat: fake it.

Pretend to be confident even in situations that give you anxiety. It also helps if you intentionally place yourself in situations that have a social aspect and thus make you nervous, but also have some aspect that you are confident with, like if you are a good runner or know a lot of a certain type of trivia. The confidence in what you are doing will help offset the fear about where and with whom you are doing it, and help you fake it a lot better - or even help you overcome it entirely (the more you do it, the less afraid you will be - though there will probably still be some apprehension).

The advantage is that this works without doping yourself up on drugs to try and 'fix' yourself.

The disadvantage is it is probably harder than drugs.

My mom used to tell me that if I was scared of talking in front of a group of people, I should picture them all in their underwear and they wouldn't be so scary.

I still have nightmares about those scary underwear people.
I agree with CSlave, that's a very good answer. You must try and block the negative feeling, you wont be the only one feeling like that.I suffer quite badly from it and it has ruined my life to the extent that i cant work where theres people around me.I have bad days when i try to avoid everyone and good days when i give myself a shake and pretend that i am a confident person,it works sometimes but not always.I have learned to live with it,but if its really bad why don't you go for counseling to help regain your confidence,,it might work and you wont know until you try.
