why do people engage in?

Question:

behavior that is emotionally and mentally unhealthy for themselves?

for example, staying in an abusive relationship where you are used for your money but yet not good enough in any other area of your life?

I know a couple of people like this and it is beyond my realm of conprehension as to why they would stay like this.............when they are fully aware they have a choice.

Answers:
Fear. They are afraid of being alone. They have hopes the person they are with will change. They figure they have been with this person so long, no one else will want them, or that they have no right to bring this sort of baggage into a new relationship. They feel it must be THEIR fault, that they have done something wrong to be treated like this.

They think this is normal and they don't know how a real relationship is supposed to work.
