Dr. had me lie back & he pulled down my pants & felt all over my belly WITHOUT a nurse or anyone in the room; i got to thinking AFTER arrived Home-- Does Male Doc supposed to have female present in Room when he did THAT? OR IS IT supposed to be only WHEN doing pap-smear, or/etc.?
Just curious? -- comments? 50 plus yr. old female in Ga.--USA.

Answers:
Usually there is a female health care worker of some level just to be a witness that there is no hanky panky.

BUT this is really for the Doctor's protection from having you claim that he did something bad to you...
Not for you to be protected from the Doctor...

It is not a law that he have an audience during an exam or procedure.

It is also something as you now know is a comfort factor for many women, but perhaps he didn't have an available person to assist at the time.

I had a colonoscopy and it was a female doctor with a female assistant.

The only thing that bothered me was that she didn't buy me dinner or even a drink.

But she did respect me in the morning...

Well my g/f actually just had a colonscopy done, when she had the initial exam there was a doctor and a ,ale nurse in the room, it was just an adominal exam where the undercloths were left on, this is fine though im not at all comfortable with the idea, mayby im being possesive? i dunno i dont like the idea that a doctor was doing that without a nurse present but i knwo it is not against the law (i checked hehe) anyway when she actually had the procedure done there were three people in the room to my knowledge and one was a feamle nurse, reason for the famle was because they put you under for that procedure, or do at least at this location, if you are awake it is YOUR responsability to request a female be present or that no males be in the room.
I'm not sure.

The part of your story that I WAS concerned about was that 'he pulled down your pants'. The patient should remove clothing items themselves, not the Doctor OR Nurse. Were your pants removed or just slightly lowered? To access the stomach area, I see no reason for their removal.

I'm sure that you could request the presence of a nurse if it makes you feel more comfortable next time.
Every time my doctor checks me when I'm undress, he always has his nurse there. If you feel uncomfortable, I think you should always ask that a nurse be in the room.
actually, in many states, it is a law that someone should be there..however, many doctors think that their patients would rather be alone and no nurse at all. The best thing to do, is to find out what the policy is in your state, and the next time, either ask for a nurse to be present, or tell the doctor of your concerns and ask him why you did not have a nurse present for you...I had a doctor here who I loved because he did not have a nurse always standing there gawking. Now, don't get me wrong, I know they are professionals and certainly don't even think that way, but I am so self concience, that it always bothered me. I hope you just vocalize it and let him know you don't want any more checkups without a nurse. If he refuses, time to get another doctor. good luck sweetheart
i would think that despite your age any kind of invasive proceedure there should be a female nurse in the room not only for legal purposes but to comfort the individual.
I think there should have been one. However, next time you or a relative goes to the doc. remember to ask for a nurse to be there. Sometimes doctors forget because it becomes so automatic. Hopefully it was nothing serious.
If your doctor is male and you are a female, then yes, there should be another female in the room when he examines you.
I'm not sure if it's illegal or not! If you ever feel uncomfortable when a dr is doing something, ask them to stop! If you prefer a nurse in the room let them know when you check in! My dr. doesn't always have a nurse in the room but I am comfortable with her so I'm ok with it!
