I work in the mental health unit of a supermax prison. I will be able to use much of this info with my inmates! (I do suicide watches 2-3 times a week)

Thanks so much for the information!

If you need someone to talk with immediately, call your local Crisis Clinic 24-hour helpline, and they can refer you to support groups. Also NAMI (National Advocates for the Mentally Ill) has support groups, phone referrals, and lots of great information.
If there's no one close to you to talk with, go to your nearest hospital ER, and they can help you.

People might see suicide as a quick fix, and even that they are helping their family. It is not. My father killed himself 10 years ago and I still think about him everyday. I miss him. I think about him when I see other men who look like he did. I think about him when I see fathers with daughters. I feel so sad. I hurt me so much. Please if someone is feeling suicidal please get help. You can feel better. Doctors can give medication. Therapist can talk to you. It can get better. Please do not give up. I hope your link helps someone who is considering suicide but doesn't really want to carry it out. For young people, especially, who may not have seen enough of life to recognize its ups and downs, suicide can be tragic.

But the older I get, the more I recognize that suicide is not always wrong. If you have lived long enough to see that the long-term trend is down (even if there are occasional upticks), I think people should not be condemned for choosing to end their lives.

To me, it is kind of like choosing to walk out of a bad movie. You shouldn't leave after the first part, because the movie might get better and you need to give it a chance. But if you are more than halfway through, and you can see that the movie is not getting better, you shouldn't have to stay through to the bitter end, just because that's what other people expect.

A previous poster points out that suicide hurts those you love and who remain behind. She is absolutely right. Suicide is a very selfish act. But sometimes, in some situations, for some people, it might be about the only time they ever get to do a thing that is just for themselves.

I realize that this is not a popular view, and I certainly would *never* encourage anyone to commit suicide. In fact, I will state again that suicide is most often a tragedy. But I now know that this is not always the case.
