can lithium?

Question:
csn lithium cause diarreah?

Answers:
The simplest answer is yes. The real question is why do you have the diarrhea? You need to answer how long you've had it, the frequency (how many times a day), is it watery or just loose stools, and if it's getting worse. Are you also having nausea, vomiting? How long have you been on the lithium? What is your current dosage? Have you been going for regular blood tests (ideally once a month) and do you keep track of the BUN (Blood, Urea, Nitrogen), Creatine level (measures amt in kidneys), and the lithium level when your doctor gives them to you? It's in your best interest to keep your own records of these tests at home so if you get sick you can see if there's been any increase in the lithium level that could indicate toxicity. Have you talked to your doctor about the therapeutic range? It's a very narrow range. Some people can't tolerate as much as others. For some people, like me, who have been on it for years and years, I've learned that after each toxic episode (some minor, some requiring hospitalization), my levels need to be kept lower. I've never had back-to-back toxic reactions, so I've been lucky to have maintained steady levels that when I became toxic It was more apparent.

If you're on lithium and this isn't just a general want-to-know question, you should consult your doctor as soon as you can. If it gets worse or there is cramping, go to the ER.

Other Answers:
I'm pretty sure. I couldn't stay on it long enough for it to cause anything because of the nausea. It causes horrible gastric problems for lots of people. And very important that you stay hydrated. See your doctor.

Check the paperwork your pharmacist should have provided with it. I know it can cause "upset stomach" and that just may be what it is doing to you. Please check with your doctor. Lithium can cause kidney problems that can be very serious. This medicine is only given in extreme cases where other medicines have failed. Please be very careful with it, and let your doctor monitor you frequently. This is a very dangerous drug.

I had the diarreah. Drink alot of water. Mine lasted until my levels were correct then it just stopped. Also, make sure you are also on birth control because lithium is deadly to a fetus in the 1st trimester

Yes nausea, loss of appetite, and mild diarrhea.

tell your doctor immediately if you have a lack of coordination, muscle weakness, slurred speech, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, tremors or shaking.

Are you taking the lithium yourself or are you asking the question for someone else? Whatever it is, lithium carbonate is prescribed to treat bipolor and and other depressive conditions. I have listed the side effects for you below. With any drug there comes an information leaflet that tells you all you need to know. Hope this helps..

The most common side effects that can occur in persons taking lithium are fine hand tremor, dry mouth, altered taste perception, weight gain, increased thirst, increased frequency of urination, mild nausea or vomiting, impotence, decreased libido, diarrhea, and kidney abnormalities. Many of the gastrointestinal side effects (nausea, taste alterations, diarrhea) often disappear with continued therapy. Additionally, they may be less common if lithium is taken in divided doses with meals. If diarrhea or excessive urination lead to dehydration, lithium toxicity is possible. Lithium can also cause changes in the electrocardiogram, low blood pressure, and decreased heart rate.
