how do I get help for someoe who has mental illness?

Question:
My mother in law is in serious need of help. She has a life long history of abuse and has put my wife through hell her whole life. My father in law has finally come to his senses and filed for divorce after 15 years of constant mental and verbal abuse. The problem is she thinks that she is fine and doesn't need any help. My wifes step father has been living with his 74year old mother and they've been stalked by her on a nightly basis. She has recently found God in the most extreme way and leaves 20 page letters to her husbad in his truck calling him the seed of satan and God's will is for them to be together and God's full wrath will be felt because he lied to God by breaking his wedding vows by filing for divorce. It is very scary to read and one can only fear the worst possible outcome. We have contacted the authorities and they say that there is nothing they can do until she physically gets violent. What can we do.The lawyers are dragging their butts and not much help either. any advic

Answers:
You have my sympathies.

The authorities can't really do much as things are. Unless there is physical violence, as they have told you.

However, her behaviour can be construed as harrassment and / or stalking. You have some evidence in her letters. If you can, try to document all her actions and movements where she gets into some form of contact with you or your wife or father-in-law. Do this consistently and on a longterm basis.

With the evidence, you might be able to get a legal restraining order or a personal protection order.

If your evidence is strong enough and supports it, the judge may order that she undergoes a psychiatric examination.
