Are all psychologists "diagnosis happy"?
Question:
You have bipolar disease", or, "depression."
Answers:
I totally agree with remysquarepants.
Personally, my brother, my sister, and myself all went to the same psychiatrist at different points in time. He diagnosed all three of us as bipolar. Not only did this not fit each of us (only my brother fit this diagnosis,) but the drugs he prescribed me produced awful side effects that he refused to accept as being from the drug(s). I eventually looked em up in my PDR and found out that I was right - they were indeed listed side effects. My outrage is that if this doc has this pet diagnosis and favorite drugs, he should at least be well versed in the side effects!
I later visited two other docs who had differing diagnosis. It goes to show that psychiatry/psychology is frightfully subjective!
Other Answers:
No, not all psychologists are "diagnosis happy", but a lot (and I mean a lot) of them are. And how can you measure such a thing, it's mostly subjective anyway.
I went to a shrink, and they've a lot to say about anything. Just because they went to college, have a white lab coat on, and speak big (ger) words, - doesn't mean crap. But it does intimidate and 'wow' the general public.
Keep common sense at the front, and take what these guys say with a grain-of-salt. Go to the shrink, but retain control of your therapy.
0ho you have a fear of being diagnosed
yes they will say some thing like that
they might even help. your choice
why go the long angry way around if you need help just walk in tell them the truth hold nothing back see if they can help if not you can go back to being like you are now
Psychologists are diagnosis happy, but insurance companies are. Let's say that you are having difficult dealing with a divorce. You are not really depressed or anxious, but feel you need help. So, you meet with the psychologist for your intake and decide that you would like to come back for treatment. So, your psychologist's office calls your insurance company for a pre-authorization and they ask for a diagnosis code. The psychologist could say, "She doesn't have a diagnosis- she just needs help getting through a divorce." The insurance company would deny this because it is therefore "not medically necessary". Meanwhile, you are feeling miserable. So, psychologists need to come up with a diagnosis to prevent you from paying out of pocket.
If I can avoid diagnosing someone, I will. I realize the stigma and labels that come with mental illness. However, due to financial reasons, that isn't always feasible. what if there right, u could be bipolar or have depresion they just wanna help, and is ur choice to get therapy they r not going ti point a gun at u if u dont.
