What should I expect when I take my daughter off of Concerta?

Question:
She is 12 and is on 54mg of Concerta (along with Wellbutrin and Clonidine). Her pdoc thinks we should take her off the Concerta for the summer and see how she does. I already have his input about what to expect - more hyper, less predictable, less irritable (less irritable will be very pleasant) - but I would love to hear from an 'at home expert'. The pdoc does not have to live with this 24/7 but moms and dads do. She is very hyper and impulsive in the mornings before she has her meds (quite toddler-like). Please tell me that it can't get much worse.
She was already on these meds before we met and adopted her so I have never seen her without them.

Answers:
I recently took our 18 year old son off concerta, he was on 54 mg as well. The only real difference that I have noticed is he is more fidgety than he was on the med. Concerta is not like most of the ADHD meds it doesn't build up in the body like Strattera/Ritalin etc. So whatever is going to happen it should happen in the first 48 hours.
Hope this helps.

Other Answers:
the clonidine and wellbutrin should keep her pretty calm. I'm on wellbutrin for both depression and ADHD,and i'm not hyper. I'm sure clonidine will take care of that, depending on what time it's given. They give it to children to relax them before surgery, so. yeah. And as for it getting much worse, the concerta is a stimulant, wellbutrin is kind of a stimulant, and clonidine is a depressent, and although wellbutrin is still a stimulant it doesn't really increase activity, only focus and feelings of physical pleasure. Give it a try, you can always go back on it if it doesn't work.

Our child was taking off his Concerta this spring and it was a nightmare. He was diax with being bi-polar, he was also on Clondine and still is. We have been playing with his meds since then..The Concerta was aiding in seeing people, it has been a long spring and summer. But it your child is ADHD can they change the meds to Strtera it is a none stimulate. But keep her on the Concert until you see if the Strtera works sometimes it takes up to 6 weeks to be fully in her system. You will find that if she taking off the Concerta she will be the same all day long as she is now before the meds. She may also need to See a therapist to help deal with issues that are unresolved from before you got her, don't give up. I have adopted children also and they do bring baggage that needs to be addressed. Good luck and God bless you.
