Bipolar Depression caused by Drug Abuse?

Question:
What are your thoughts about the link between drug abuse and psychiatric conditions?

Answers:
It is a known fact that people with mental illness or disorders are subject to drug and alcohol abuse. This is probably most often an attempt to self-medicate. The symptoms of many mental disorders lists drug and alcohol abuse as well as risky sex or sexual promiscuity. Bipolar disorder is one of them. Other Answers:
i've often wondered this myself.

i'm sure there is a connection---but where to find out more?
Drug abuse can cause severe abnormalities in the brain chemicals that are responsible for normal cognition and perception.

I have known people who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder because they mimicked the symptoms from taking drugs . . . although I think in this case the person's problems resolved when they got off the drugs permanently.
I know of at least one case where the person is certain that his bipolar is linked to his past LSD use.
