I don't know what is wrong..?

Question:
For almost 5 yrs, my brother has been different. He did meth a few times and got his heart broken for the first time. After that he started being weird. He seemed anxious in the beginning. He ignored his friends when they came over. He blamed me for things. He said he saw my bro and sis (they past) and they told him my parents killed them and he also said my sister's boyfriend tried to drown my sister. He tried to attack my other sister's boyfriend and my stepdad for no reason. At first my family and I thought that he just needs to get over this girl that broke his heart. We weren't educated and americanized to know of possible mental disorders. Now that I'm educated, I know it was possible schizophrenia because of paranoia and hallucinations but I can't say I'm certain because he's not diagnosed but the yr afterwards, he wasn't that way anymore. For the last 3 and a half yrs, he's been locked up a few times for small things like parole violations.

Answers:
I am an occupational therapist who has worked in several mental health facilities and it does indeed sound like yor brother has schizophrenia, even if he hasn't displayed any active symptoms in 3 yrs. This is actually normal; the progress of the disese is to go through 3 phases. The first stage is the prodromal phase, charachterized by a decrease in function, decline in grooming and hygiene, interactions with others, and overall participation in life. The second is the active phase where psychotic sympyoms become apparant. Sometimes a psychological stressor appears to pricipicate, or bring on, the active phase. Active symptoms of the disease include halluinations, delusions, and disorganized speech and behavior. Following the active phase, the residual phase consists of the remission of the psychotic symptoms that are most disturbing to others. However, it is characterised by apathy, generally unwxpressive mood, and lack of goal directed behavior. It sounds like your brother is currently in this phase. This is a very serious disease, it REQUIRES immediate attention. A very large percent of shizophrenics end up committing suicide, becomming homeless, or becomming incarcerated, as your brother has. He needs to see a psychiatrist right away so that he can recieve proper medication, and recieve therapy for his deficits. If you do not have enough money to get him to a doctor, there are government run agencies that will help for free. Check out www.nami.org to get more info. Good luck!

He should be checked out by a psychiatrist. They will be the only one that will properly diagnose him if there is a problem. Who knows what kind of answers some of these idiots on here will give you!! Good luck with your brother, and God Bless you!

May be he is correct. Talk to him. He miss her sister and bro and thus can behave differently.

Talk to him first and then any professional!

He do fear from ur parents thus he dont come home back!

Talk to him (My best Suggestion)

ask the courts or his parole officer to have a psychiatric evaluation ordered. Make sure you tell them everything you can and have specific dates, times, and incidents written down. Keep names of any witnesses and ask them to be available if necessary.
Good luck and GOD BLESS you and your family
