Can you stop a compulsive gambler? How about a compulsive shopper?
The only way you can is with professional help. But first, the person has to admit that a problem exists, which is difficult.
fallenangel - not much
I would say teach him/her nothing but lies, that way when he/she compulsively lies, he/she will really be telling the truth. :)
Bullet to the head!!
needle & cotton,duct tape,jaw clamp
or a good old smack in de mush.
Hook them up to an electric shock generator and shock them every time they lie. Ah, Pavlovian style conditioning.
That's a question that has been going for as long as society itself has existed. The short answer is that you can't. A therapist can but you can't. Just don't base life decisions on the person.
Karen
tell them you dont want to know them anymore unless they stop
I dont think you can to be honest (excuse the pun) a liar hates to be confronted so you could try and tell them you know what they are upto and you don't like it.
Just remember that they probably lie for a reason and it is'nt to hurt others it is to make themselves feel better.
Good luck take care :)
Get them born-again! Jesus is the answer to every problem on this planet! Start watching Christian TV like Daystar or Trinity Broadcasting Network on DirecTv! Go to www.oru.edu or call 918-495-7777 -- 24 hours a day -- 7 days a week someone is available to pray with you! I have used it many times and watch them on Golden Eagle Broadcasting and on World Harvest channel 321 on DirecTv at 8 pm central time every week night! Miracles happen there and go all around the world as people watch and call in for prayer!
The best way, IMO, is to ignore them if they're lying, then pay plenty of attention on the occasions they do tell the truth. It's a simple positive reinforcement strategy, but it works.
You can't do anything. They have to want to change and they have to want to do the work. You can't do it for them.
All you can do is make its clear that you don't find it acceptable; they have to learn that there are consequences. So you have to figure out how you'll respond if you catch them out in a lie.
I shared a house with a compulsive liar, it was hell. She made peoples lives a misery and got off on it.
Don't condone it, don't get involved in the emotional scenes, don't be co-dependant.
And remember; there are two meanings to the word "forgive". One is the way the Christians mean it, total forgiveness and everything back to the way it was. It needs a genuine heartfelt apology from the guilty party and a meaningful attempt not to repeat the harmful behaviour. A compulsive liar can't manage it.
The second meaning is closer to "I expect no better than that from you, I can walk away and bear no grudge". You let it go and move on.
If you know he's lying, stop him and make him tell you the truth. Or, if you're the liar, whenever you start to lie, stop yourself and reconsider what you're saying.
Tell them to go to counseling, but I would not believe them if they said that they would go. They can't be helped unless they want to be helped, just like any other compulsions.
Tape record them>>Take out a notepad and start writing down what they say and remember to state the date and time.
Also call them on the carpet and find others who can back you up. Ask the person in private why they lie? Sounds like poor self esteem to me.
wash his mouth out with soap
tell him you are not easy ha
Don't try. Life is too short, and you do not want to be manipulated into feeling bad about yourself.
