Is there a web site for service dogs for the mentally ill ?

Question:
I want to get a service dog for the mentally ill..I am suffering from depression and my Dr. suggested that I get a service dog. I know I can train my own dog but where do I get a trainer to help and where do I get the dog?

Answers:
This is something that I have been doing a lot of research on over the past several weeks. Try searching Yahoo for "psychiatric service dogs" or just "service dogs" and you should be able to get several sites that contain information about them. Keep in mind though that "Therapy Dogs" are NOT service dogs. If you are reading about therapy dogs, that is not what you are looking for.

Other Answers:
I'm not sure if there are dogs for the mentally ill, I do know they have them for disable people as well as for blind people, and those for blind people are called "guide dogs". I know that just getting a dog (even if it's not trained) would make a big difference in your life, as they are great company and would lift your spirit with their love, companionship and loyalty. so, maybe think about getting the dog first (I know there are breeding places where you can get an already trained dog). Ask your local vet for more information. I personally recommend you get an adult trained dog, as it would be easier for you to adjust to him/her and not have to go trough the whole process with a puppy. from my point of view and experience Labradors are great for something like that (those are the dogs used as guide dogs). good luck and cheer up, life is beautiful!
