Do I have a personality disorder?
Question:
Answers:
Don't worry too much about how to label the problem. It sounds like a systems-level problem and not one that you alone are responsible for creating or solving. This is a relationship issue and would probably be best explored in couples therapy. By the sounds of it, this might even be something that could be dramatically helped in just a handful of sessions (maybe 3-5). Personality disorders dominate a person's entire life and personality. As a rule, all or almost all relationships are impacted, as well as job and school functioning. If this problem you describe is relatively isolated to your marriage, and your marriage is otherwise relatively calm and satisfying, it's very doubtful that you suffer from a personality disorder. We all have traits that can, at various times, seem personality disorder-like. Only if the traits are severe enough to impair functioning and persist across many different life circumstances, would there be a possibility of a personality disorder.
