Why do some anti-depressant. cause increased thoughts of suicide as a symptom?
Question:
Answers:
When some is suffering from major depression, their thinking becomes stunted. They no longer really put thought together and while they may think of killing themselves, they don't have the motivation or ability to put the logical steps to kill themselves in order. Once they start on antidepressant medications, they become more capable of thinking and they have more energy. Doctors usually keep really close tabs on patients until about 3 months into the drug therapy because this is the time when most people commit suicide. Suddenly they are able to think clearer and they have the energy and ability to string logical thoughts together and they kill themselves. After the 3 or 4 month mark, patients usually have a decrease in their suicidal thinking and therefore the risk of them killing themselves is not as great. Good question!! Hope this explanation helps.;

Anti D. should be peoples lost choice anyways. They should try spirituality first.
It work different on everyone the chemical reaction. When someone is extremely depressed, they may have thoughts of suicide every day but are literally unable to carry them out because they have so little energy. One of the first things noticeable when someone starts taking a med is increased energy. this energy then gives them enough of a push to actually carry out their thoughts of suicide.
This is why severely depressed people are often closely monitored the first few weeks they are on an anti-depressant. When treated with those, the medication will send some people into a manic phase. In bipolar people those that suffer both depressive and manic episodes are at greater of suicide than those that have depressive and hypo-manic episodes. But some of the anti-D's can send a person who has never had mania into a manic episode. It's more about the persons reaction to the medicine than the actual medicine. Those cases are not all that common, just something to be aware of and watch for.
Hope that answers your Q and that it is clear enough.

Terry The two or three answers above me are very right. Also sometimes those medicines cause the symptoms they are meant to treat because they are altering a really complex system (the human brain). You have to keep on trying different ones until you find a suitable one. This is why I say that medications for depression should only be for severe situations.
