If two or more people in your family suffer from depression and their lives end with Suicide?

Question:
does that make commiting suicide hereditary. Two of my family members (My Mom and Nephew) both committed suicide and I was wondering if that could mean thinking along the lines of doing that to yourself could have something to do with being hereditary? I just don't think I could deal with that again.

Answers:
the thought of committing suicide is not hereditary, but the depression can be. My heartfelt sympathies are with you for the loss of your mom and nephew but again please understand when I say - thinking that you may feel the way they did can promote a sense of hopelessness and depression - so what you can do is honor their lives by keeping a tab on your feelings (so you can catch signs of depression) and go out of your way to be positive in life.
You may be having negative thoughts because you are mourning, what you have been through is most definitely very very painful, don't confuse the pain of loss with the pain of having to live (that's what most suicidal people think - they just cant do life anymore). God Bless you and I hope you get strength from the people around you.
Whew, tough stuff. Depression and other mental health problems can be hereditary, but knowing that should help educate your family and yourself about the importance of getting help.
