When trying to change a habit or pattern of behavior, what have you done or thought that has worked?

Question:
I am interested in the different methods and techniques people have used personally to change their own habits and behaviors. People are ingeniously creative when it comes to getting what they want. But behavior change is hard, in my experience. What have you done that has worked? Do you think it would work for any type of habit, or just your own? If you have been successful, please share your methods. (Please note, this question is not about addictive substances specifically, but if you have something relevant that involves addictive processes, you are still welcome to share. But I am mostly wondering about things like biting nails, interrupting others' sentences, keeping a messy house, etc.)

Answers:
Messy House syndrome.. I would tackle one or two rooms a day.. Spread out the workload so it doesn't seen overwhelming and won't put you off doing it.. for quitting smoking I visualised worms.. thousands of worms all wriggling and slimy looking whenever I craved a cigarette.. it definately helped..

What worked best for me, and something you hear that works for other people, is keeping yourself out of situations where your unwanted behavior is most likely to come out.

Like if you're trying to quit smoking, stop hanging around with smokers. I think a lot of behaviors have triggers, and if you can avoid the triggers it makes it easier to control your behaviors. anger - i wore a rubber band around my wrist & when i got angry at somthing a snapped the rubberband as hrd as possible, counted to ten & walked away. it worked!

nervousness and anxciaty- if i was going somwhere like to preform w/ my band i read a book or did things to keep my mind away from being nevous.
