The simple answer is just because one is paranoid doesnt mean they dont have a high level of intelligence. In fact, in history, some of the most intelligent people (edgar allen poe, for instance) suffered from paranoia and other mental illnesses. I know this from experience. I have a paranoid personality...part of it is that of mental illness (mental illness does not mean "mentally challenged" keep in mind) and part of it is the way I grew up and past experiences with other social relationships. It could very well be the case with your friend. As far as the mental illness aspect of it, many of us cannot control the thoughts that cross our mind...trust me i know, I have tried and tried without success. The only thing that helps is medication for me. The best way to describe paranoia is a vicious neverending cycle once it grabs hold of you...being sane enough to know that you are being paranoid but not quite sane enough to trick your mind into believing that.
If you do the research you will find that there is a fine line between genius and mental disorder. And paranoia and depression are very common, I would know-...must mean Im a dormant genius.
