what happens if a husband brings a wife in for phychiatric help and the staff thinks he needs some help too?

If you are going to a psychiatrist and not a psychologist then belief would be that any mental issues are chemical and can be treated with medications. As long as the husband is not a threat to himself or anyone else they really can not do anything to him. The most they can do is call the police and get a 72 hour hold for observation if the officer agrees. The best thing the staff can do is refer them to a clinic with care they can afford.

Well no one can force anyone into psychiatric care unless they're a danger to themselves or others. And then, a doctor has to review the patient to make sure this is actually the case. So, unless the husband was a danger to anyone there is nothing that can be done.
If the woman is being involuntarily committed, she will most likely be sent to a state mental institute (not a pleasant place), and if he needs to be evaluated as well, if he is deemed a threat to himself or others he can also be involuntarily committed.

There isn't much you can do, if they both refuse help. Unless they do something that involves the law in some way, there is very little that can be done. You need at least 3 doctors opinions, to get them admitted. When on S,S.I, they receive a food card, and a medical card as well.
I don't know what your relationship is to this couple, but if you are family, and they have children, then you might try Family and Children's Welfare. They might be able to help. if you think their mental problems warrant it.
Whether the hubsand is willing to recieve help or not, the MOST IMPORTANT thing is that the wife seeks & recieves the help she needs. Obviously the relationship had some problems for it to have gone as far as it did. PLEASE...tell wife to put herself first! The best friend she will ever know is herself.
