Is Kava Kava banned from sale in Britain?

Question:
I have seen conflicting internet info on this.

Answers:
Yes. According to the BBC it's banned in the UK.

A similair drought of KavaKava is going on in USA. While there is no official ban on the product virtually all stores pulled the product from the shelves after raised FDA alerts showed Kava could cause liver damage. Also there are rumors that kava kava was causing people to get into "drunk" driving accidents yet not be prosecuted because they were not under the influence of alcohol, just drunk off Kava.

I was a big fan of Kava, it helped me get a good nights sleep some stressful nights. It's doubtful the substance was nearly as toxic as alcohol but there aren't weatlhy herbal lobbyist to sway our politicians.

Here is a USA Today (2005) story about America's reaction to Kava. It also supports the claim that the UK has banned it outright. http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2005-12-08-kava-concerns_x.htm
