ive been on lithium for 3 months i developed edima the dr took me off it is the damage permanent?
Question:
Answers:
Lithium is a salt. Therefore, what you had experienced was retention of fluid. This is a common side effect caused due to the inability of the kidneys to drain the fliud (through urine). It is a known fact that salt tablets and high sodium drinks are given to people who work in extreme heat or in sports. Lithium is a stronger salt which, at times causes the kidneys to shut down. In your case, the doctor did the right thing and you should recover quickly. So your answer is no permanent damage. I hope that he gets your meds right and you live a long happy life.

Edema is swelling due to excess fluid... "Edema (BE: oedema, formerly known as dropsy or hydropsy) is swelling of any organ or tissue due to accumulation of excess lymph fluid, without an increase of the number of cells in the affected tissue. Edema can accumulate in almost any location in the body, but the most common sites are the feet and ankles."
You didn't mention what "damage" your doctor said had been done...but as for the condition, no it should not be permanent...
