Why is suicide considered a crime?

Question:
If a person decides they want to end their life why shouldn't they be able to do so? Why does society make it so difficult for a person to kill themselves?

Answers:
Suicide (in some states) is considered a crime as a deterrent. If you accomplish the act, you will not face the consequences ; in actuality, society has no personal, benevolent interest in suicide prevention. The law is designed to protect :
1. life insurance companies (who might have to pay major claims for someone who has just taken out a whole life policy)
2. surviving friends/family who must face years of mental anguish/guilt
Suicide is not always a choice, and well educated legislators understand that. Good Luck !

Other Answers:
It depends on where you are. In some states and countries it isn't a crime. That is the LEGAL answer. However for some cultures the law isn't the only factor. In the Christian Cultures Suicide is wrong because it is a Murder of Self and cannot be repented from.
