how can a person be diagnosed with an illness without any kind of testing.?

Question: my son was diagnosed 7 years ago as being schizophenic at the hospital. he went in having an anxiety attack and with any evaluation at all was diagnosed. his life has been pure hell ever since with all these different medicines they have had him on.

Answers:
Children under the age of 18 can not be diagnosed with schizophrenia. However they can have psychotic symptoms. I would take him to a psychiatrist. If he is under 18 see one that specializes in adolescents. As a mental health nurse I agree that they do put kids on too many meds at times. Get a proper diagnosis from the doctor and be sure to stay well informed about treatment. Ask lots of questions
