So that you would know who your parents are, so you would not be unknowingly having sex with your father/brother/uncle etc. and so the species would prosper by not having everyone have STD's. It's hard, but I'll try not to let my Christian faith influence my answer. I think that, besides religious reasons, people try to only have one sexual partner at a time for two reasons:
the possibility of children, and wanting to have a family for that child (particularly women)
second, people are jealous, and it's impossible to separate the sexual act from emotional committment (or at least it should be that way)
The second part of your question I can't really answer without my Christian faith playing a role.
Human beings are complex beings. Many different feelings come to play in ones everyday life. add sex to the equation and more emotions come to play on two or more parties involved. During the earth's lifetime of 5000 years or so, it has been tried in many ways and several varies ways. With some it worked better than with others and one never knows the extent that a human's feelings will change in love/sex relationships.
Sex was not only for sexual gratification but used also to produce children. Only one woman can give birth to a child and only one father can be the father of that child. So if multiple parties are involved, the issue then arises that it's my child not our child. We're not like some animals that can reproduce having several fathers and males can share this.
There are some societies that you can go and live like this but beware, once you're in, they may not let you out. What are the consequences of your actions upon someone else?
As long as we have human beings, we will have human emotions. If we haven't learned in 5000 years or so why do you think we can change now.
