DO I HAVE A MENTAL PROBLEM?
Answers:
No, some people talk to only ones they consider intelligent enough for them to understand, and sometimes that is ourselves.lol
Other Answers:
As long as you don't think you are talking to someone else, it's cool.
A lot of people talk to themselves. Einstein talked to himself.
I talk to myself mainly because I'm bored and have nobody else to talk to. Then there are people who talk to themselves because they suffer from a mental illness like schizophrenia in which they think they're actually having a conversation with another person. This doesn't sound like your case so I'd bet you do it just because you enjoy your own company. (and that's a good thing!) =)
No you do not have a mental problem. It is just your way of sorting out things in your mind.
Sometimes, when you have a lot on your mind, talking to yourself helps you to focus and concentrate on the problem at hand. Too often, when we try to do it in our minds, we are distracted by external influences -- noises from the next room, music from the neighbours yard, kids yelling in the street, etc.etc.etc. When we talk to ourselves, we drown out a lot of external stimuli, and it helps us pay attention to what we want to concenterate one. It also helps us put things in order. My husband talks to himself constantly when he's wiring a circuit or checking one out, running through the checklist of what should be where, making sure all the connections are good, etc.
I don't think you're at risk. The ones with the problem are the guys who stand on the street corner and shout their thoughts at passersby. And it sounds like you're a long way from that!
People do that as a sort of sorting-out technique, its called 'open airing', its very common, its like in the old days when people would put the laundry out in clothes lines to dry; we didnt think anything of it. The only issue is really when you're talking to yourself because it's in response to vioces that you are genuinly hearing, you hear vioces that arent there, or in your own head. that's a problem; that's a big problem. Other wise, it is a sign of a person who is very busy, somewhat overwhlemed, thats all.
No, you don't have a mental problem. I think that you've gotten some great answers here.
I talk to myself and think aloud all the time. Sometimes it's dialoguing for a blog entry. Sometimes it's woolgathering. And sometimes, I am 'tuning up' for a Toastmasters speech, and playing with the shape and feel of the words I will use.
I expect that anyone who overhears my silly Kitty Songs that I inflict on my cats when I get home probably thinks I'm half a bubble off plumb, but the cats seem to enjoy it!
