Adult attention deficit disorder?

Question:
I dont know what to do, tried the natural ways, no help. I feel helpless and my brain is so scrambled, I dont know where to start...

Answers:
Ok. This one is really close to my heart as I have ADHD (aka ADD) and it has affected every area of my life. The best treatment will always be a combination of medication and education. It is estimated that 8 out of 10 respond positively to medication. For those that it helps, it Really helps. But there will always be a need to learn about ADD, how it can affect your life, and management/copeing techniques. There are some wonderful books out there... even on specific topics such as ADD in the workplace and ADD in Romantic relationships. With all the challenges we face with ADD, it can be very disruptive to our lives and to those around us. It can play havoc with studies, work, and interpersonal relationships. I honestly believe a major factor in my recent divorce was caused by a lack of knowledge and understanding of my ADD. I was placed on medication after diagnosis and sent on my merry way. We had no idea the frustrations that can be caused by it. The forgetfulness, chronicly late, etc. It is much easier for those close to you to accept these types of behaviors if they understand the challenges you face and that these are NOT character flaws. This has entirely to do with brain chemistry. It is inherited. It is not your fault nor is it an entirely bad thing. It is just a part of who you are. There are many wonderful sides to ADD too. Boundless energy and enthusiasm (at least for what has your attention for the time), brilliant creativity, and a very charismatic zest. Your will find a much greater happiness by learning about ADD and how it affects you and those around you. Don't rely on medical prfessionals to hand you a nice pamphlet. Take it upon yourself to learn. You will be richly rewarded with not only a better understanding of yourself and why you have so many piles of papers, magazines and the like around (LOL) but also with greatly improved relationships with others. When they understand your challenges and that these are not character flaws, it will help them not to take such offense at lateness and such. With learning techniques to help compensate and manage how your ADD affects the world around you... a much richer life will open up. And then you can enjoy yourself and your quirky behaviors. lol
See your dr. to check for other alternatives. ADD does not "go away" as we get older. It is ok if you have to take medicine to live a happy productive life. Find what works for you and good luck to you.
